Today marks 23 years since the start of the first peacekeeping mission of the Bulgarian Army – as part of the United Nations mission UNTAC in Cambodia devastated by the Khmer Rouge. A commemorative ceremony was held in Sofia at the monument of the soldiers who died in the Far East organized by the union of former and current blue helmets. Bulgaria joined UNTAC on 4 May 1992 and was involved in the mission until 27 November 1993. In this major effort UN engaged more than 22,000 in military and civilian staff from 31 countries. 1300 Bulgarian blue helmets joined the operation and 10 of them died in that Asian country.
