Electronic system set to replace paper tickets in Sofia

Sofia plans to finally replace paper tickets for public transport with a new electronic system for transport fare collection, the CEO of the Urban Mobility Center Hristian Petrov has said.

Collection of transport fares will be based on the time and distance of trips. The company which is going to develop the new ticketing system will be selected within three months. Companies from Austria, Germany, Turkey, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, South Korea and Italy have applied for the respective public procurement tender.

The new electronic ticketing system will be launched at the beginning of 2020 at the earliest.
