Whole villages in Eastern Rhodopes replace tobacco growing with emigration abroad

Photo: BGNES - library

Entire villages in the Eastern Rhodopes are giving up on traditional tobacco growing in the region. One of the reasons is the low purchase prices.

The agricultural institutions in the region report extremely low interest in buying the new harvest. Applications submitted so far for registration of tobacco producers from the entire Kardzhali region are just 96, which is 11% of those submitted in 2020. The traditional production has been replaced by emigration abroad, BNR correspondent Valya Apostolova reported.

Locals believe that tobacco production could be revived if raw purchase prices rose.
