Christmas blessings for health and prosperity

Photo: library

The magical sound of the bagpipe, the captivating rhythm of Christmas songs, the power of Christmas incarnations- all this is part of the rituals aimed to protect the community and ensure sound health and well-being. Groups of young men go round the village on Christmas Eve, which is also part of the ritual for health and prosperity. That is why carolers are welcomed as dear guests in every single home, as according to folk beliefs, their songs and good wishes bring good luck and prosperity.

In a way, the custom has survived to modern times, especially where the memory of the old traditions is kept alive and all village residents know one another. Things are quite different in the big city, of course, as well as abroad, where our compatriots observe these traditions their own way. We have selected several authentic Christmas songs for them, as well as for all friends of Radio Bulgaria.

Carolers from the village of Shtraklevo, Ruse district, say blessings for barns full of wheat, baskets full of grapes, barrels full of wine, and barns full with splotch-faced lambs. The song is performed for the well-being of all household members. The flat field, the white grape vine and the splotch-faced sheep boast on how they would requite the farmers with plenty of wheat, grapes, luscious wine and full barns.

Carolers have a blessing for every house member. The song “Zadranchalo Yasno Zvanche” is about the young lasses.

“St. Peter is planting a vineyard, together with St. Demetrius. They come across a cherry tree, make a wine barrel and fill the barrel with wine. A golden foam covers the wine. A falcon snatches the foam and takes it to a goldsmith who makes three golden cups. The first cup- for the Mother of God, the second cup- for St. Basil, the third cup- for St. John. The song sung in Sliven district is about three patron saints, as well as about the Holy Theotokos, who are often praised in Christmas carols. ”

Carolers are welcomed with homemade wine, dried fruits, etc. They also receive pretzels, meat, flat sausage, pork fat, etc. They use these gifts for their traditional banquet. They also take part at the traditional chain dance that takes place in their village at Christmas.

Dear friends of Radio Bulgaria! May all good Christmas blessings reach you and your loved ones, your homes and hearts! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
