An increase of more than 140% in the electricity from photovoltaic plants and a collapse of the output from coal plants in 2023 show data in the report of the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation submitted to the Bulgarian parliament.

In 2023, the electricity produced in the country was 35,861,159 MWh. The nuclear power plant in Kozloduy has the largest share - 43%, the share of thermal power plants is 29%. The electricity produced from renewable sources accounts for 18%, as half of this output if from hydropower plants.

In 2023, 1,558,739 MWh of electricity were produced from photovoltaics. This is a growth of 140.92 %compared to 2022. The installed capacity has also doubled.

In the case of wind power plants, the growth is 5.23%. The wind turbines produced 809,580 MWh of electricity.

The big losers are lignite and brown coal power plants. In the case of lignite coal, the drop in output was 45.56%, and in the case of brown coal - 50.99%.
